The Passion Week of Jesus

Sunday: Jesus Enters Jerusalem

Jesus and his disciples approached Jerusalem. Jesus rode a colt which two disciples collected for him. A crowd gathered and spread their garments and palm branches on the road ahead of him. They shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed be the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Glory to God in the highest.”

Monday: Jesus Clears the Temple

Jesus arrived at the temple to find a market place with people buying and selling. This angered Jesus. He overturned tables and drove out the animals and said, “My temple will be called a house of prayer. But you have made it a den of thieves!”

When Jesus was in the temple, the blind and lame came to him and he healed them. Children shouted out, “Praise to David’s Son!” This made the chief priests and teachers very angry. Jesus then went to Bethany to spend the night. The following day he returned and taught in the temple.

Tuesday: Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

One of the disciples, Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and agreed to betray Jesus for thirty silver coins. From this point on, Judas looked for a chance to hand Jesus over.

Thursday: The Last Supper

Jesus Washes the disciples’ feet - 6pm
Before the Passover meal began, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. Peter resisted, but Jesus answered, “If I do not wash your feet, you cannot be my disciple.” Peter promptly replied, “Then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well!” Jesus did this to teach the disciples the importance of serving.

Thursday: The Last Supper

One will betray Him Jesus then shared that one of the disciples would betray him. The disciples where puzzled and asked Jesus who. Jesus said, “I will dip this piece of bread and give it to the one.” He then gave the piece of bread to Judas. Jesus said, “Go, and do what you must!” Judas left immediately, but the other disciples did not understand why.

Jesus breaks bread While they ate, Jesus took the bread and broke it and gave thanks to God. He said, “Take and eat, this is my body broken for you.” He then took a cup and gave thanks to God and said, “Drink, this is my blood, given for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Thursday: In the Garden

Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane - 11:30pm After the Passover meal Jesus and his disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus went a little further ahead and prayed with great anguish, “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering from me. Yet not my will but your will be done.” He prayed this several times. Jesus said to his disciples to stay awake and keep watch, but they could not keep themselves from falling asleep.

Judas betrays Jesus - 1am Then Jesus said, “Look, the hour has come for the Son of Man to be handed over. Here comes my betrayer.” As Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived with a large crowd of armed men. Judas kissed Jesus saying, “Peace be with you, teacher.” The kiss was the sign, and the men arrested Jesus. All the disciples left Jesus and ran away.

Friday: Jesus on Trial

Brought before the Jewish council - 1:30am Jesus was brought before the religious leaders. The chief priests and teachers attempted to bring false witnesses against Jesus, but they failed to find any evidence to condemn him. Finally the High Priest asked, “Are you the Messiah?” Jesus answered him, “You have said it. And soon you will see the Son of Man sitting at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.” With this the High Priest tore his clothes and shouted, “Blasphemy!” They all cried, “He is guilty and deserves to die.” They spat on Jesus, beat him and ridiculed him.

Friday: Jesus on Trial

Jesus is taken to Pilate, who sends Jesus to Herod - 6am Early in the morning they took Jesus to the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. When he heard that Jesus was a Galilean and that Herod (who ruled that region) was in town, he sent him to Herod. Herod was pleased to see Jesus, hoping to see a miracle. However, Jesus would not even speak to Herod. So Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and sent him back to Pilate.

Friday: Jesus on Trial

Jesus sent back to Pilate - 7am Pilate called everyone together and said to them, “I find this man not guilty of any crime you accuse him of, nor does Herod. He does not deserve death. You have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” The crowd shouted, “Kill him and give us Barabbas.” (Barabbas was a murderer and had caused a riot). Pilate appealed to the crowd again, but they became louder, shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate made a third attempt to save Jesus, but the crowd continued to shout all the louder, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate gave in to the crowd and condemned Jesus to death, freeing Barabbas instead. He handed Jesus over for them to do as they wished.

Friday: Jesus is Handed Over - 8 am

The solders flogged Jesus with a lead-tipped whip, placed a purple robe on him and a crown of thorns on his head. They struck him and mocked him saying “Hail, King of the Jews”. When they grew tired of this they led him away to be crucified. A large crowd followed.

Friday: Jesus is Crucified - 9 am

Jesus was led to a place called Golgotha, which means ‘The Skull’. There they crucified him. They nailed his hands and his feet to the cross and hung him there. A sign was placed above Jesus that read, ‘The King of the Jews.’ Two criminals were also crucified, one on each side. The religious leaders mocked Jesus.

Darkness - Noon

At Noon, the sun stopped shining, and darkness covered the whole country for three hours. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father! Into your hands I commit my spirit!” Then Jesus died. At that moment, the earth shook, the temple curtain was torn from top to bottom and many godly men and women were raised back to life.

A Roman officer who saw all this declared, “Truly this was the Son of God.”

Friday: Jesus’ Death and Burial - 3pm

A righteous man, Joseph of Arimathea, went to Pilate and asked for Jesus body. Jesus body was wrapped in a linen sheet and placed in an unused tomb. This was done just before the Sabbath began. On the Sabbath, the religious leaders had the tomb sealed and guards placed in front. They were worried that the disciples might try to steal Jesus’ body.

Sunday: The Resurrection

After the Sabbath, very early in the morning, Mary Magdalene and several other women went to the tomb. Suddenly there was a violent earthquake and an angel of the Lord opened the tomb. The guards were terrified and froze. The angel spoke to the women, “Do not be afraid, Jesus is not here, he is risen.” As the women quickly ran from the tomb, Jesus met them and greeted them. He said, “Do not be afraid! Go tell the others to leave for Galilee, I will meet with them there.”

The disciples left for Galilee, and there on the mountain they saw him and worshiped him. Jesus told them, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations.
